Brian Browning joined the Encore team as Senior Director of Engineering in March of 2024. Having worked in the renewable energy industry for over 20 years, he brings a deep knowledge of renewable energy engineering and has played an instrumental role in building out the capacities of our in-house engineering team.
Prior to joining Encore, Brian owned Solar Power Engineering (SPE), a consulting firm providing design services for commercial and utility scale solar and battery storage projects in the northeast region. Brian started SPE in 2010 and was responsible for design and construction oversight related to rooftop and ground mounted solar projects ranging from 150kW to 5MW. SPE also was responsible for designing stand alone and DC coupled battery storage projects. Prior to starting SPE, Brian was a commercial project engineer for groSolar, a large solar distributor and integrator based in White River Junction, Vermont. Prior to groSolar, Brian was a project engineer and electrical engineering department manager for Northern Power Systems where his main responsibility was the design and construction oversight of custom power systems used primarily in off-grid applications. Before Northern Power, Brian worked as an electrical engineer for 10 years at Hallam Engineering in Burlington, focused on the design of electrical distribution systems for industrial and institutional buildings. Brian received a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Vermont and has held a Professional Engineer’s license since 1996. Brian is a licensed electrical engineer in the states of Vermont and Maine.

What does a sustainable future mean to you?
Reduced reliance on fossil fuels. Financial and environmental equity across all races and genders. Reduction in the income gap that exists in the US. Increased taxes on the wealthy. Reducing the non-sustainable high electricity demands we are currently seeing for AI and Crypto.
What is your favorite way to spend time outside?
My wife and I bought a sailboat back in 2021. We love sailing with family and friends on Lake Champlain. In the winter I enjoy nordic skiing and the occasional snowboard outing.
What is a great book or podcast that you have engaged with recently?
I recently re-read Parable of the Sower by Octavia Butler. Very timely book given our current climate and political landscape. My go to podcast is Hidden Brain, I have always been interested in human social behavior.
