Vermont Works for Women’s Trailblazers is a training program to support the entry and success of women and gender non-conforming individuals in careers in construction and the trades. Participants in the program have the opportunity to obtain or increase skills and certifications for jobs that are in high demand.
Encore’s Amber Lessard stopped by Trailblazers this summer to introduce participants to the solar industry. The lesson at the Carpenters Union in South Burlington was a blend of presentation and hands-on learning. Participants got the inside scoop on different career opportunities in the industry and what a typical day can look like. The running joke of the evening? Gifting Amber a t-shirt that says “I’ve been on that roof!” after looking at photos of solar projects she’s worked on all across the state. Afterward, participants got hands-on practice connecting model homes to an electrical grid using an electric grid model developed by the Vermont Energy Education Program. Participants walked away from the visit with a better understanding of the steps and skills needed to enter the solar industry.
