Burlington, VT — Encore Renewable Energy announced today that the company has become a Certified B Corporation®, joining more than 1,700 leading businesses in 50 countries that share the common goal of redefining business success.
“For nearly 10 years, our mission has been to foster sustainable community growth; advancing clean energy and other redevelopment projects on environmentally challenged and underutilized properties. We have always defined sustainable growth in a holistic manner which includes the creation of high quality jobs, protecting the environment, and strengthening our communities, along with the economic bottom-line,” said Chad Farrell, Encore’s founder and President. “Part of what makes achieving this certification so meaningful is to be in the company of so many great companies that share these values.”
“The rigorous evaluation process required to join the Certified B Corporation community which measures a company’s impact on the environment, its employees, and the communities in which it operates,” said Encore CFO Blake Sturcke, “underscored the integrity and value of the Certified B Corporation achievement. In so doing, it made Encore that much more proud of our inclusion in a group of world-class peers focused on doing business better.”
“Encore joins a robust community of Certified B Corporations leading the clean energy economy as well as within Vermont including several well-known brands,” says Jay Coen Gilbert, Co-Founder of B Lab. “Both Encore’s industry and The Green Mountain State are well represented in the global movement to redefine success in business so that one day all companies compete to not only be the best in the world, but best for the world.”
To become a Certified B Corporation, B Lab, the nonprofit that certifies B Corps™ and supports companies using business as a force for good, conducted a robust evaluation of Encore and determined the company met the comprehensive performance standards required to qualify for certification. In this process Encore answered more than 250 questions about its business practices and had those answers verified by B Lab. Encore scored an overall 99 points, compared to the standard needed for certification of 80 points. About B Lab
B Lab is a nonprofit organization that serves a global movement to redefine success in business so that all companies compete not only to be the best in the world, but the best for the world.
B Lab drives this systemic change through a number of interrelated initiative: 1) building a community of Certified B Corporations to make it easier for all of us to tell the difference between “good companies” and good marketing; 2) passing legislation to accelerate growth of social entrepreneurship and impact investing (20 states have already passed benefit corporation legislation); 3) developing B Analytics, a customizable platform for investors to benchmark and report the impact of their global private equity portfolios; and 4) providing free, powerful tools for businesses to measure, compare and improve their social and environmental performance (more than 16,000 businesses use B Lab’s free B Impact Assessment).
