A 5MW solar PV project sited at the Brattleboro, Vermont landfill developed by Encore Renewable Energy received a Certificate of Public Good (CPG) from the State of Vermont Public Utility Commission on June 30, clearing the way for construction of this groundbreaking project. Encore partnered with Sky Solar to resuscitate the project for the Windham Solid Waste Management District (WSWMD) after the previous developer ran into financial difficulty and halted work on the project. Construction on the project is scheduled to begin in the fall.
The announcement of the CPG award has received significant press coverage based on the value of the project to the WSWMD as well as a number of local schools and towns in Windham County who will serve as customers for the group net metering project and, in doing so, see significant savings on electrical bills.
In addition, the project recently also gained praise in the form of an editorial in The Brattleboro Reformer, which suggested that the WSWMD and its partners “got it right” with solar siting and planning on the project and that “Regulatory officials and other solar developers should keep this case example in mind when siting other projects in the state.”
