3 Questions to get to know Arjun
What does a sustainable future mean to you?
To me, a sustainable future means giving future generations the chance to live happy, healthy, and dignified lives that does not come at the expense of Earth’s precious resources and inhabitants. I also believe it means a fundamental rethinking of society that places our planet and its finite capacity for our use at the forefront of political and economic systems. On a more personal level, a sustainable future means that the wonders and joys of the natural world that I’ve experienced can be preserved for future generations to appreciate and enjoy as well.
What’s your favorite way to spend time outside?
I grew up in coastal San Diego and spent my youth running, surfing, biking, and everything in between so it’s tough to pick just one! I’d have to go with a relaxing swim on a warm day after a long run (Torrey Pines State Beach is a hometown favorite) or a sunset hammock session in a vibrant city park (shout-out to the Charles River Esplanade!). I also love nature-based travel and have been fortunate enough to take amazing trips to Bolivia, Guatemala, the Dolomites, and Norway in recent years that have punctuated my deep appreciation for our planet.
What’s a great book or podcast you’ve engaged with recently?
In the last 5 years I’ve become super interested in urbanism, city design, and sustainable infrastructure, and so I’ve recently begun reading Jane Jacobs’ seminal work The Death and Life of Great American Cities. I also recently moved to Brooklyn, NY and am excited to learn more about NYC’s rich history of transit-oriented development and how to sustain a city that works for everyone.
